MARC SWANSON
Selected 2009-2010 Activity
NORTON FAMILY CHRISTMAS PROJECT
Marc Swanson was commissioned to produce the 2009 Norton Family Christmas Project gift. Since 1988, Peter Norton has commissioned a different artist each year to produce an iconic multiple that is shipped to a list of collectors, curators, critics, artists, and friends of the Norton family worldwide. For this commission, the artist made a small silver rhinestone-studded antler, which arrives in monochrome gray packaging. With this honor, Marc joins the ranks of such previously-commissioned artists as Jim Hodges, Kara Walker, Vik Muniz, Christian Marclay, Takashi Murakami, Lorna Simpson, Yinka Shonibare, and Lawrence Weiner, among others.
NEW YORK
Marc currently has three sculptures on view at the PS1 Contemporary Art Center as part of the group Between Spaces exhibition. The curators gave the artist his own gallery in the exhibition, which remains on view until April 5. In addition, a new rhinestone-covered antler pile sculpture will be included in a forthcoming exhibition at the Museum of Arts and Design, in its new Columbus Circle building. The exhibition, entitled Dead or Alive: Nature Revisited, focuses on work made using once-living materials (in this case, naturally-shed deer antlers) and will be on view form April 27 through October 24.
LOS ANGELES
A group of eleven new photographs were on view for the last two months of 2009 in Los Angeles, in a special pop-up exhibition space at the Pacific Design Center. They made up part of a show called Other Arrangements, curated by the artist Diana Thater. Marc made these works in collaboration with the artist Joe Mama-Nitzberg.
MIAMI
In the Richard Gray booth at Art Basel Miami Beach, Marc exhibited two new rhinestone works: a pair of fighting buck heads and a full-body indoor deer. He also showed two new works in his ongoing series of wall mounted box sculptures that make use of classic Hollywood film stills, these both taking their imagery from Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. In addition, the artist participated in Art Projects, the fairs outdoor sculpture program, exhibiting a standing full-body deer covered in silver rhinestones. This work was installed in front of the Jackie Gleason Theater, just outside the new main entrance of the fair.
SAINT LOUIS
The Saint Louis Art Museum is presenting a solo exhibition of Marcs work this winter/spring. It consists of a single work, Dark Room, his latest video piece, made in collaboration with the musician and video editor Neil Gust, their third collaboration so far. The show will run form February 5 through April 4.
SEATTLE
Michael Darling is including one of Marc Swanson and Joe Mama-Nitzbergs photographs in a group exhibition-Kurt, about the work and influence of famed Seattle-based musician Kurt Cobain-at the Seattle Art Museum. The exhibition opens in May and runs through the summer.
KANSAS CITY
The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art has commissioned Marc to make a large-scale sculpture that will be part of the museums collection and installed in a prominent location in the city center, scheduled for completion and installation sometime in the fall of 2010.
HOUSTON
The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston will present a solo exhibition of Marc Swansons work in the summer/fall of 2011.
